GNOME Evolution 2.4.2.1 memory allocation

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability, which was classified as problematic, has been found in GNOME Evolution 2.4.2.1. This issue affects an unknown code. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory allocation vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-789. The product allocates memory based on an untrusted, large size value, but it does not ensure that the size is within expected limits, allowing arbitrary amounts of memory to be allocated. Impacted is availability. The summary by CVE is:

GNOME Evolution 2.4.2.1 and earlier allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (CPU and memory consumption) via a text e-mail with a large number of URLs, possibly due to unknown problems in gtkhtml.

The weakness was disclosed 03/09/2006 by Alan Cox (Website). The advisory is shared at vupen.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2006-0040 since 12/20/2005. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Neither technical details nor an exploit are publicly available.

It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 217025 (Linux Distros Unpatched Vulnerability : CVE-2006-0040), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (25050), Tenable (217025), SecurityFocus (BID 16899†) and Secunia (SA19094†). The entry VDB-28561 is pretty similar. If you want to get the best quality for vulnerability data then you always have to consider VulDB.
