The HTML Help ActiveX control (Hhctrl.ocx) in Microsoft Windows 2000 SP3, XP SP2 and Professional, 2003 SP1 allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via unspecified functions, related to uninitialized parameters.

The bug was discovered 02/13/2007. The weakness was published 02/13/2007 by H. D. Moore with MetaSploit as MS07-008 as confirmed bulletin (Technet). The advisory is shared at microsoft.com. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2007-0214 since 01/12/2007. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. Neither technical details nor an exploit are publicly available.

It is declared as proof-of-concept. We expect the 0-day to have been worth approximately $100k and more. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 24332 (MS07-008: Vulnerability in HTML Help ActiveX Control Could Allow Remote Code Execution (928843)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch MS07-008 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at microsoft.com. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
