RarLabs WinRar up to 3.20 Directory information disclosure

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

A vulnerability was found in RarLabs WinRar up to 3.20 (File Compression Software) and classified as problematic. This issue affects some unknown processing of the component Directory Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a information disclosure vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-200. The product exposes sensitive information to an actor that is not explicitly authorized to have access to that information. Impacted is confidentiality. The summary by CVE is:

Directory traversal vulnerability in UnZip 5.50 allows attackers to overwrite arbitrary files via invalid characters between two . (dot) characters, which are filtered and result in a ".." sequence.

The weakness was presented 09/19/2003 by Jelmer (Website). The advisory is shared at tecchannel.de. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2003-0282 since 05/12/2003. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1592 for this issue.

After even before and not, there has been an exploit disclosed. The exploit is available at tecchannel.de. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 38 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 18722 (Slackware 9.0 / current : unzip vulnerability patched (SSA:2003-237-01)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Slackware Local Security Checks.

Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at rarlab.com. The problem might be mitigated by replacing the product with as an alternative. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be establishing an alternative product.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (12004) and Tenable (18722). tecchannel.de is providing further details. See 1680, 19039, 24005 and 24534 for similar entries.
