Linux Kernel up to 2.6.16-rc2 do_debug denial of service

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

A vulnerability, which was classified as problematic, has been found in Linux Kernel up to 2.6.16-rc2 (Operating System). Affected by this issue is the function do_debug. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a denial of service vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-404. The product does not release or incorrectly releases a resource before it is made available for re-use. Impacted is availability. CVE summarizes:

Linux kernel 2.6.16-rc2 and earlier, when running on x86_64 systems with preemption enabled, allows local users to cause a denial of service (oops) via multiple ptrace tasks that perform single steps, which can cause corruption of the DEBUG_STACK stack during the do_debug function call.

The bug was discovered 02/07/2006. The weakness was disclosed 02/12/2006 by John Blackwood (Website). The advisory is available at debian.org. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2006-1066 since 03/07/2006. The exploitation is known to be difficult. Local access is required to approach this attack. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit.

The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 6 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 23897 (Mandrake Linux Security Advisory : kernel (MDKSA-2006:151)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Mandriva Local Security Checks and running in the context l.

Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published 7 months after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (21180) and Tenable (23897). The entries 25895, 28521, 28211 and 27937 are pretty similar.
