digestmd5.c in the CMU Cyrus Simple Authentication and Security Layer (SASL) library 2.1.18, and possibly other versions before 2.1.21, allows remote unauthenticated attackers to cause a denial of service (segmentation fault) via malformed inputs in DIGEST-MD5 negotiation.

The bug was discovered 04/10/2006. The weakness was released 04/11/2006 by Mu Security with Mu Security research team (Website). The advisory is available at securityfocus.com. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2006-1721 since 04/11/2006. The exploitation is known to be difficult. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit.

It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 1 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 22479 (Mac OS X Multiple Vulnerabilities (Security Update 2006-006)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family MacOS X Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 115824 (VMware Security Update (VMSA-2008-0008 and VMSA-2008-0009)).

Upgrading to version digestmd5.c eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published 7 months after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
