A vulnerability was found in Adobe Document Server 6.0. It has been declared as problematic. Affected by this vulnerability is an unknown functionality. The manipulation of the argument ReaderURL with an unknown input leads to a cross site scripting vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-80. The product receives input from an upstream component, but it does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes special characters such as "<", ">", and "&" that could be interpreted as web-scripting elements when they are sent to a downstream component that processes web pages. Adobe Document Server for Reader Extensions 6.0 allows remote authenticated users to inject arbitrary web script via a leading (1) ftp or (2) http URI in the ReaderURL variable in the "Update Download Site" section of ads-readerext. NOTE: it is not clear whether the vendor advisory addresses this issue. In addition, since the issue requires administrative privileges to exploit, it is not clear whether this crosses security boundaries.

The bug was discovered 07/26/2005. The weakness was presented 04/13/2006 by Tan Chew Keong and Carsten Eiram with Secunia Research (Website). The advisory is shared at vupen.com. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2006-1785 since 04/13/2006. The exploitation appears to be difficult. The attack can be launched remotely. The successful exploitation needs a single authentication. It demands that the victim is doing some kind of user interaction. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1059.007 for this issue.

It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 259 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 21220 (Adobe Document Server for Reader Extensions < 6.1 Multiple Vulnerabilities), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family CGI abuses and running in the context r.

Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published before and not just after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 4355.
