Adobe Document Server 6.0 Error Message cross site scripting

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

A vulnerability classified as problematic was found in Adobe Document Server 6.0. This vulnerability affects an unknown code of the component Error Message Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a cross site scripting vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-80. The product receives input from an upstream component, but it does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes special characters such as "<", ">", and "&" that could be interpreted as web-scripting elements when they are sent to a downstream component that processes web pages. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality. CVE summarizes:

Adobe Document Server for Reader Extensions 6.0, during log on, provides different error messages depending on whether the user ID is valid or invalid, which allows remote attackers to more easily identify valid user IDs via brute force attacks.

The bug was discovered 07/26/2005. The weakness was released 04/13/2006 by Tan Chew Keong with Secunia Research (Website). The advisory is shared for download at adobe.com. This vulnerability was named CVE-2006-1788 since 04/13/2006. The exploitation appears to be difficult. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. Successful exploitation requires user interaction by the victim. There are neither technical details nor an exploit publicly available. The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1059.007.

It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 259 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 21220 (Adobe Document Server for Reader Extensions < 6.1 Multiple Vulnerabilities), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family CGI abuses and running in the context r.

Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published before and not just after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 4355.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (25772) and Tenable (21220). Entries connected to this vulnerability are available at 29655, 29654, 29653 and 29649.
