The JavaScript engine in Mozilla Firefox and Thunderbird 1.x before 1.5 and 1.0.x before 1.0.8, Mozilla Suite before 1.7.13, and SeaMonkey before 1.0 does not properly handle temporary variables that are not garbage collected, which might allow remote attackers to trigger operations on freed memory and cause memory corruption.
The bug was discovered 04/13/2006. The weakness was published 04/14/2006 by Georgi Guninski (moz_bug_r_a4) with TippingPoint and the Zero Day Initiative as confirmed advisory (CERT.org). The advisory is shared at kb.cert.org. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2006-1742 since 04/12/2006. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. Neither technical details nor an exploit are publicly available.
It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 1 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $25k-$100k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 21993 (CentOS 4 : firefox (CESA-2006:0328)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family CentOS Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 117722 (CentOS Security Update for Firefox (CESA-2006:0328)).
Upgrading to version 1.x eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 3977.
