Details
A vulnerability was found in Linux Kernel up to 5.15.46/5.17.14/5.18.3. It has been declared as problematic. This vulnerability affects the function smb_check_perm_dacl. The manipulation of the argument posix_acls with an unknown input leads to a reference count vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-911. The product uses a reference count to manage a resource, but it does not update or incorrectly updates the reference count. As an impact it is known to affect availability. CVE summarizes:
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: ksmbd: fix reference count leak in smb_check_perm_dacl() The issue happens in a specific path in smb_check_perm_dacl(). When "id" and "uid" have the same value, the function simply jumps out of the loop without decrementing the reference count of the object "posix_acls", which is increased by get_acl() earlier. This may result in memory leaks. Fix it by decreasing the reference count of "posix_acls" before jumping to label "check_access_bits".
The advisory is available at git.kernel.org. This vulnerability was named CVE-2022-49366 since 02/26/2025. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit.
Upgrading to version 5.15.47, 5.17.15 or 5.18.4 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch cf824b95c12a1abacadbc2d069931963221a3414/248d71b440aef829f5cc5f6545ca113ef5062900/9758a6653c27867d810de02b4e5697163dda9883/d21a580dafc69aa04f46e6099616146a536b0724 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at git.kernel.org. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version.
