The bug was discovered 03/05/2007. The weakness was disclosed 03/06/2007 by Piotr Bania (poland) with Apple (Website). The advisory is shared for download at docs.info.apple.com. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2007-0711 since 02/05/2007. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. There are neither technical details nor an exploit publicly available.

It is declared as proof-of-concept. As 0-day the estimated underground price was around $100k and more. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 24761 (QuickTime < 7.1.5 Multiple Vulnerabilities (Windows)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 115523 (Apple QuickTime Multiple Vulnerabilities (APPLE-SA-2007-03-05)).

Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at docs.info.apple.com. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version.
