Linux Kernel up to 5.10.109/5.15.32/5.16.18/5.17.1 of_parse_phandle reference count

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability has been found in Linux Kernel up to 5.10.109/5.15.32/5.16.18/5.17.1 and classified as critical. Affected by this vulnerability is the function of_parse_phandle. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a reference count vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-911. The product uses a reference count to manage a resource, but it does not update or incorrectly updates the reference count. As an impact it is known to affect availability. The summary by CVE is:

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: ASoC: atmel: Fix error handling in sam9x5_wm8731_driver_probe The device_node pointer is returned by of_parse_phandle() with refcount incremented. We should use of_node_put() on it when done. This function only calls of_node_put() in the regular path. And it will cause refcount leak in error path.

The advisory is shared at git.kernel.org. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2022-49241 since 02/26/2025. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available.

Upgrading to version 5.10.110, 5.15.33, 5.16.19 or 5.17.2 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch 90ac679aa6a01841da90ec5a4aaa4b5e0badddf0/f589063b585ac6dd2081bde6c145411cf48d8d92/14228225091a0854b1de23e5b4fe8bdeeca9683b/f43ad5dc43240289f4cf13c16cc506f4f7087931/740dc3e846537c3743da98bf106f376023fd085c is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at git.kernel.org. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version.
