Linux Foundation Xen up to 4.4.0 memory corruption

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

A vulnerability was found in Linux Foundation Xen (Virtualization Software). It has been classified as problematic. Affected is an unknown code block. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality. CVE summarizes:

Xen 3.2.x through 4.4.x does not properly clean memory pages recovered from guests, which allows local guest OS users to obtain sensitive information via unspecified vectors.

The weakness was disclosed 06/17/2014 by Jan Beulich with SuSE as XSA-100 as confirmed advisory (Website). The advisory is shared for download at xenbits.xenproject.org. The public release has been coordinated in cooperation with the vendor. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2014-4021 since 06/11/2014. The exploitability is told to be difficult. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The requirement for exploitation is a authentication. There are neither technical details nor an exploit publicly available. The advisory points out:

While memory pages recovered from dying guests are being cleaned to avoid leaking sensitive information to other guests, memory pages that were in use by the hypervisor and are eligible to be allocated to guests weren't being properly cleaned. Such exposure of information would happen through memory pages freshly allocated to or by the guest.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 80928 (OracleVM 3.3 : xen (OVMSA-2015-0004)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family OracleVM Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 370039 (Citrix XenServer Security Update (CTX140984)).

Applying the patch xsa100.patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at xenbits.xen.org. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (93862) and Tenable (80928). The entries 67170 and 67171 are pretty similar.
