Apple Safari 2.0/2.0.1/2.0.2/2.0.3 Helper BOMStackPop memory corruption

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

A vulnerability classified as critical has been found in Apple Safari 2.0/2.0.1/2.0.2/2.0.3 (Web Browser). Affected is the function BOMStackPop of the component Helper. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:

Heap-based buffer overflow in BOM BOMArchiveHelper 10.4 (6.3) Build 312, as used in Mac OS X 10.4.6 and earlier, allows user-assisted attackers to execute arbitrary code via a crafted archive (such as ZIP) that contains long path names, which triggers an error in the BOMStackPop function.

The bug was discovered 04/19/2006. The weakness was shared 04/19/2006 by Tom Ferris (McAfee) with McAfee AVERT Labs (Website). The advisory is shared for download at us-cert.gov. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2006-1985 since 04/21/2006. The exploitability is told to be difficult. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available.

It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 21341 (Mac OS X Multiple Vulnerabilities (Security Update 2006-003)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family MacOS X Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 115357 (Apple Mac OS X Security Update 2006-003 Not Installed (APPLE-SA-2006-05-11)).

Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published 4 weeks after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 33605.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (25945) and Tenable (21341). The entries 27361, 26531, 30222 and 30221 are related to this item.
