Linux Kernel up to 6.13.1 uvcvideo uvc_probe deadlock

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in Linux Kernel up to 6.13.1 and classified as critical. Affected by this issue is the function uvc_probe of the component uvcvideo. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a deadlock vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-833. The product contains multiple threads or executable segments that are waiting for each other to release a necessary lock, resulting in deadlock. Impacted is availability. CVE summarizes:

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: media: uvcvideo: Fix deadlock during uvc_probe If uvc_probe() fails, it can end up calling uvc_status_unregister() before uvc_status_init() is called. Fix this by checking if dev->status is NULL or not in uvc_status_unregister().

The advisory is shared for download at git.kernel.org. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2024-58059 since 03/06/2025. The exploitation is known to be difficult. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 250003 (Linux Distros Unpatched Vulnerability : CVE-2024-58059), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment.
