PHP remote file inclusion vulnerability in sources/lostpw.php in Aardvark Topsites PHP 4.2.2 and earlier, when register_globals is enabled, allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary PHP code via the CONFIG[path] parameter, as demonstrated by including a GIF that contains PHP code.
The weakness was disclosed 04/30/2006 by cijfer (Website). The advisory is shared at vupen.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2006-2149 since 05/03/2006. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details as well as a public exploit are known.
A public exploit has been developed by cijfer in Perl and been published even before and not after the advisory. The exploit is available at securityfocus.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. By approaching the search of inurl:sources/lostpw.php it is possible to find vulnerable targets with Google Hacking. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 21329 (Aardvark Topsites CONFIG[path] Parameter Remote File Inclusion), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family CGI abuses.
There is no information about possible countermeasures known. It may be suggested to replace the affected object with an alternative product. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 4375.
