A vulnerability classified as critical was found in MySQL (Database Software). Affected by this vulnerability is the function open_table
of the file sql_base.cc. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
Buffer overflow in the open_table function in sql_base.cc in MySQL 5.0.x up to 5.0.20 might allow remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via crafted COM_TABLE_DUMP packets with invalid length values.
The bug was discovered 05/03/2006. The weakness was released 05/05/2006 by Stefano Di Paola with isec as confirmed advisory (CERT.org). The advisory is shared at kb.cert.org. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2006-1518 since 03/30/2006. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be launched remotely. A single authentication is necessary for exploitation. Technical details and also a public exploit are known.
A public exploit has been developed in ANSI C. It is possible to download the exploit at securityfocus.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 2 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $25k-$100k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 21492 (FreeBSD : mysql50-server -- COM_TABLE_DUMP arbitrary code execution (a8d8713e-dc83-11da-a22b-000c6ec775d9)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family FreeBSD Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 165149 (SUSE Security Update for MySQL (SUSE-SA:2006:036)).
Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published 1 days after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 4620.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (26232) and Tenable (21492). Entries connected to this vulnerability are available at 2196, 2197, 2195 and 30060.
