Apple Mac OS X 10.3.9 Local Privilege Escalation

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a local privilege escalation vulnerability. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:

MySQL Manager in Apple Mac OS X 10.3.9 and 10.4.6, when setting up a new MySQL database server, does not use the "New MySQL root password" that is provided, which causes the MySQL root password to be blank and allows local users to gain full privileges to that database.

The bug was discovered 05/11/2006. The weakness was disclosed 05/12/2006 by Ben Low (McAfee) with McAfee AVERT Labs (Website). The advisory is shared at docs.info.apple.com. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2006-1451 since 03/28/2006. The exploitation appears to be easy. An attack has to be approached locally. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. Neither technical details nor an exploit are publicly available.

It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 21341 (Mac OS X Multiple Vulnerabilities (Security Update 2006-003)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family MacOS X Local Security Checks and running in the context l.

It is possible to mitigate the problem by adding an authentication mechanism. A possible mitigation has been published even before and not after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (26420) and Tenable (21341). The entries 26531, 30221, 30220 and 30219 are pretty similar.
