Mozilla Firefox/Thunderbird up to 1.5.0.3 code injection

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

A vulnerability was found in Mozilla Firefox and Thunderbird up to 1.5.0.3 (Web Browser) and classified as critical. Affected by this issue is some unknown processing. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a code injection vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-94. The product constructs all or part of a code segment using externally-influenced input from an upstream component, but it does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes special elements that could modify the syntax or behavior of the intended code segment. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:

Mozilla Firefox and Thunderbird before 1.5.0.4 allow remote attackers to cause a denial of service (crash) and possibly execute arbitrary code via (1) nested <option> tags in a select tag, (2) a DOMNodeRemoved mutation event, (3) "Content-implemented tree views," (4) BoxObjects, (5) the XBL implementation, (6) an iframe that attempts to remove itself, which leads to memory corruption.

The weakness was released 06/02/2006 by Mikolaj J. Habryn (moz_bug_r_a4) with Cybozu Labs (Website). The advisory is shared for download at us-cert.gov. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2006-2779 since 06/02/2006. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. There are neither technical details nor an exploit publicly available. The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1059.

It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 22701 (Debian DSA-1159-2 : mozilla-thunderbird - several vulnerabilities), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Debian Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 156230 (Oracle Enterprise Linux Update for Firefox (ELSA-2006:0733,ELSA-2006:0675,ELSA-2006:0610)).

Upgrading to version 1.5.0.4 eliminates this vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 4656.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (26843) and Tenable (22701). Entries connected to this vulnerability are available at 2174, 2283, 2285 and 2282.
