The bug was discovered 05/08/2007. The weakness was disclosed 05/08/2007 by Arnaud Dovi with Microsoft as MS07-025 as confirmed bulletin (Technet). The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not publicly available.

The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 110059 (Microsoft Office Remote Code Execution Vulnerability (MS07-025)).

Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch MS07-025 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at microsoft.com. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 11807.
