Unspecified vulnerability in MSO.dll in Microsoft Office 2000 SP3, 2002 SP3, 2003 SP2, 2004 for Mac, and 2007 allows user-assisted remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via a malformed drawing object, which triggers memory corruption.
The bug was discovered 05/08/2007. The weakness was disclosed 05/08/2007 by Arnaud Dovi with Microsoft as MS07-025 as confirmed bulletin (Technet). It is possible to read the advisory at microsoft.com. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2007-1747 since 03/29/2007. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not publicly available.
It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 2892 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $100k and more. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 110059 (Microsoft Office Remote Code Execution Vulnerability (MS07-025)).
Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch MS07-025 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at microsoft.com. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 11807.
