A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, was found in Microsoft Windows up to 2000 (Operating System). This affects an unknown functionality of the component Connection Manager. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a stack-based overflow vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-121. A stack-based buffer overflow condition is a condition where the buffer being overwritten is allocated on the stack (i.e., is a local variable or, rarely, a parameter to a function). This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
Buffer overflow in the Remote Access Connection Manager service (RASMAN) service in Microsoft Windows 2000 SP4, XP SP1 and SP2, and Server 2003 SP1 and earlier allows remote unauthenticated or authenticated attackers to execute arbitrary code via certain crafted "RPC related requests," that lead to registry corruption and stack corruption, aka the "RASMAN Registry Corruption Vulnerability."
The weakness was released 06/13/2006 by Peter Winter-Smith with NGS Software (Website). The advisory is shared at us-cert.gov. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2006-2371 since 05/15/2006. The exploitability is told to be easy. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. Technical details are unknown but an exploit is available.
After 2 months, there has been an exploit disclosed. The exploit is shared for download at saintcorporation.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. We expect the 0-day to have been worth approximately $100k and more. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 21696 (MS06-025: Vulnerability in Routing and Remote Access Could Allow Remote Code Execution (911280) (uncredentialed check)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 90319 (Windows Routing and Remote Access Could Allow Remote Code Execution (MS06-025)).
Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published 2 months after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Attack attempts may be identified with Snort ID 6714. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 4453.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (26814) and Tenable (21696). Entries connected to this vulnerability are available at 2309, 29994, 30803 and 30799.
