Microsoft Internet Explorer 6.0 Drag/Drop input validation

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:

Microsoft Internet Explorer 6.0 does not properly handle Drag and Drop events, which allows remote user-assisted attackers to execute arbitrary code via a link to an SMB file share with a filename that contains encoded ..\ (%2e%2e%5c) sequences and whose extension contains the CLSID Key identifier for HTML Applications (HTA), aka "Folder GUID Code Execution Vulnerability." NOTE: directory traversal sequences were used in the original exploit, although their role is not clear.

The issue has been introduced in 08/27/2001. The weakness was presented 06/28/2006 (Website). The advisory is available at us-cert.gov. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2006-3281. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. Successful exploitation requires user interaction by the victim. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not available.

The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 1766 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $25k-$100k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 22187 (MS06-045: Vulnerability in Windows Explorer Could Allow Remote Code Execution (921398)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows : Microsoft Bulletins.

Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 4304.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (28018) and Tenable (22187). See 2344, 31692, 31691 and 31686 for similar entries.
