Microsoft Visio 2002 Data memory corruption

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:

Unspecified vulnerability in Microsoft Visio 2002 allows remote user-assisted attackers to execute arbitrary code via a Visio (.VSD, VSS, .VST) file with a crafted version number that triggers memory corruption.

The weakness was presented 06/12/2007 by Chris Ries with Microsoft as MS07-030 as confirmed bulletin (Technet). The advisory is available at microsoft.com. This vulnerability was named CVE-2007-0934 since 02/14/2007. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not available.

It is declared as proof-of-concept. As 0-day the estimated underground price was around $25k-$100k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 25489 (MS07-030: Vulnerabilities in Microsoft Visio Could Allow Remote Code Execution (927051)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows : Microsoft Bulletins and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 110060 (Microsoft Visio Could Allow Remote Code Execution (MS07-030)).

Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch MS07-030 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at microsoft.com. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version. A possible mitigation has been published 2 months after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Attack attempts may be identified with Snort ID 11836. In this case the pattern Visio |28|TM|29| Drawing|0D 0A 00 00 00 00| is used for detection.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (34607) and Tenable (25489). See 3119 and 37248 for similar entries.
