Microsoft Excel 2000/2002/2003/2004/XP code injection

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

A vulnerability was found in Microsoft Excel 2000/2002/2003/2004/XP (Spreadsheet Software). It has been classified as very critical. This affects some unknown processing. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a code injection vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-94. The product constructs all or part of a code segment using externally-influenced input from an upstream component, but it does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes special elements that could modify the syntax or behavior of the intended code segment. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:

Unspecified vulnerability in Microsoft Excel 2000 through 2004 allows user-assisted attackers to execute arbitrary code via a .xls file with a crafted FNGROUPCOUNT value.

The weakness was disclosed 07/13/2006 by Xin Ouyang (Website). The advisory is shared at lists.grok.org.uk. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2006-1308 since 03/20/2006. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. It demands that the victim is doing some kind of user interaction. Neither technical details nor an exploit are publicly available. The price for an exploit might be around USD $0-$5k at the moment (estimation calculated on 07/12/2021). MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1059 for this issue.

It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 22025 (MS06-037 / MS06-038: Vulnerabilities in Microsoft Excel and Office Could Allow Remote Code Execution (917284 / 917285) (Mac OS X)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family MacOS X Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 110034 (Vulnerabilities in Microsoft Excel Could Allow Remote Code Execution (MS06-037)).

There is no information about possible countermeasures known. It may be suggested to replace the affected object with an alternative product. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 12429.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (27464) and Tenable (22025). The entries 2324, 29423, 31318 and 31316 are pretty similar.
