Microsoft Internet Explorer 6 allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (stack overflow exception) via a DXImageTransform.Microsoft.Gradient ActiveX object with a long (1) StartColorStr or (2) EndColorStr property.

The issue has been introduced in 03/22/2001. The weakness was published 07/17/2006 by H D Moore (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at vupen.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2006-3657 since 07/17/2006. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available. The attack technique deployed by this issue is T1499 according to MITRE ATT&CK.

After immediately, there has been an exploit disclosed. The exploit is available at metasploit.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 1942 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k.
