with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. Race condition in the JavaScript garbage collection in Mozilla Firefox 1.5 before 1.5.0.5, Thunderbird before 1.5.0.5, and SeaMonkey before 1.0.3 might allow remote attackers to execute arbitrary code by causing the garbage collector to delete a temporary variable while it is still being used during the creation of a new Function object.
The bug was discovered 07/26/2006. The weakness was disclosed 07/27/2006 by Benjamin Smedberg (moz_bug_r_a4) with TippingPoint and the Zero Day Initiative (Website). The advisory is shared for download at us-cert.gov. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2006-3803 since 07/24/2006. The exploitation is known to be difficult. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available.
It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 1 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $25k-$100k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 22162 (CentOS 3 : seamonkey (CESA-2006:0608)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family CentOS Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 117662 (CentOS Security Update for Firefox (CESA-2006:0610)).
Upgrading to version 1.5 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published 2 weeks after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 4326.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (27984) and Tenable (22162). The entries 2399, 2397, 2398 and 2396 are pretty similar.
