A vulnerability was found in ImageMagick (Image Processing Software). It has been classified as critical. This affects the function readsgiimage
of the file sgi.c. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a heap-based overflow vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-122. A heap overflow condition is a buffer overflow, where the buffer that can be overwritten is allocated in the heap portion of memory, generally meaning that the buffer was allocated using a routine such as malloc(). This is going to have an impact on availability. The summary by CVE is:
Integer overflow in the ReadSGIImage function in sgi.c in ImageMagick before 6.2.9 allows user-assisted attackers to cause a denial of service (crash) and possibly execute arbitrary code via large (1) bytes_per_pixel, (2) columns, and (3) rows values, which trigger a heap-based buffer overflow.
The bug was discovered 11/19/2006. The weakness was presented 08/15/2006 by Damian Put (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at secunia.com. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2006-4144 since 08/15/2006. The exploitability is told to be difficult. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. Technical details and a public exploit are known.
The exploit is shared for download at securityfocus.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 27106 (openSUSE 10 Security Update : ImageMagick (ImageMagick-2414)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family SuSE Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 156239 (Oracle Enterprise Linux Update for ImageMagick (ELSA-2006:0633)).
Upgrading to version 6.2.9 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published 5 months after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 5267.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (28372) and Tenable (27106). See 31958, 31957 and 33391 for similar entries.
