MODPlug Tracker 1.17.02.43 soundlib/load_it.cpp readitproject memory corruption

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

A vulnerability has been found in MODPlug Tracker 1.17.02.43 and classified as critical. This vulnerability affects the function csoundfile::readitproject in the library soundlib/load_it.cpp. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:

Multiple buffer overflows in MODPlug Tracker (OpenMPT) 1.17.02.43 and earlier and libmodplug 0.8 and earlier, as used in GStreamer and possibly other products, allow user-assisted remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via (1) long strings in ITP files used by the CSoundFile::ReadITProject function in soundlib/Load_it.cpp and (2) crafted modules used by the CSoundFile::ReadSample function in soundlib/Sndfile.cpp, as demonstrated by crafted AMF files.

The weakness was presented 08/16/2006 by Luigi Auriemma (Website). The advisory is shared for download at rhn.redhat.com. This vulnerability was named CVE-2006-4192 since 08/16/2006. The exploitation appears to be difficult. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. Technical details and also a public exploit are known.

A public exploit has been developed in ANSI C. It is possible to download the exploit at securityfocus.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 68266 (Oracle Linux 4 : gstreamer-plugins (ELSA-2011-0477)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Oracle Linux Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 155429 (Oracle Enterprise Linux Update for gstreamer-plugins (ELSA-2011-0477)).

Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published 6 years after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (28309) and Tenable (68266). See 57399 for similar entry.
