ISC BIND up to 9.3.2 denial of service

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

A vulnerability classified as problematic was found in ISC BIND up to 9.3.2 (Domain Name Software). This vulnerability affects an unknown code block. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a denial of service vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-404. The product does not release or incorrectly releases a resource before it is made available for re-use. As an impact it is known to affect availability. CVE summarizes:

BIND before 9.2.6-P1 and 9.3.x before 9.3.2-P1 allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (crash) via a flood of recursive queries, which cause an INSIST failure when the response is received after the recursion queue is empty.

The weakness was released 09/05/2006 as confirmed advisory (CERT.org). The advisory is available at kb.cert.org. This vulnerability was named CVE-2006-4096 since 08/14/2006. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not available.

It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 65306 (AIX 5.2 TL 9 / 5.2 TL 10 : bos.net.tcp.client (U808275)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family AIX Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 15052 (ISC BIND Multiple Remote Denial of Service Vulnerabilities).

Upgrading to version 9.2.6-p1 eliminates this vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (28744) and Tenable (65306). Entries connected to this vulnerability are available at 2510 and 2511.
