Microsoft Windows VML Vector Markup Language heap-based overflow

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, has been found in Microsoft Windows (Operating System) (affected version unknown). Affected by this issue is an unknown functionality of the component VML Vector Markup Language Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a heap-based overflow vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-122. A heap overflow condition is a buffer overflow, where the buffer that can be overwritten is allocated in the heap portion of memory, generally meaning that the buffer was allocated using a routine such as malloc(). Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:

Integer underflow in the CDownloadSink class code in the Vector Markup Language (VML) component (VGX.DLL), as used in Internet Explorer 5.01, 6, and 7 allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via compressed content with an invalid buffer size, which triggers a heap-based buffer overflow.

The bug was discovered 08/14/2007. The weakness was disclosed 08/14/2007 by Derek Soeder with Microsoft as MS07-050 as confirmed bulletin (Technet). The advisory is available at microsoft.com. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2007-1749 since 03/29/2007. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. Successful exploitation requires user interaction by the victim. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not available.

It is declared as proof-of-concept. As 0-day the estimated underground price was around $25k-$100k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 25886 (MS07-050: Vulnerability in Vector Markup Language Could Allow Remote Code Execution (938127)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows : Microsoft Bulletins and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 90405 (Microsoft XML Core Services Could Allow Remote Code Execution (MS07-042)).

Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch MS07-050 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at microsoft.com. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Attack attempts may be identified with Snort ID 12282. In this case the pattern vmlframe is used for detection. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 5524.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (35762), Tenable (25886), SecurityFocus (BID 25310†), OSVDB (36390†) and Secunia (SA26409†). The entry VDB-3252 is pretty similar.
