A vulnerability, which was classified as problematic, has been found in OpenBSD OpenSSH 4.1 (Connectivity Software). This issue affects some unknown functionality. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a information disclosure vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-200. The product exposes sensitive information to an actor that is not explicitly authorized to have access to that information. Impacted is confidentiality. The summary by CVE is:
OpenSSH portable 4.1 on SUSE Linux, and possibly other platforms and versions, and possibly under limited configurations, allows remote attackers to determine valid usernames via timing discrepancies in which responses take longer for valid usernames than invalid ones, as demonstrated by sshtime. NOTE: as of 20061014, it appears that this issue is dependent on the use of manually-set passwords that causes delays when processing /etc/shadow due to an increased number of rounds.
The weakness was shared 02/13/2007 by Marco Ivaldi (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at vupen.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2006-5229 since 10/10/2006. The exploitation is known to be difficult. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available. The attack technique deployed by this issue is T1592 according to MITRE ATT&CK.
A public exploit has been developed by Marco Ivaldi and been published before and not just after the advisory. The exploit is available at securityfocus.com. It is declared as highly functional. We expect the 0-day to have been worth approximately $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 22466 (OpenSSH < 4.4 Multiple Vulnerabilities), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Misc.. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 38560 (OpenSSH Signal Handling Vulnerability).
It is possible to mitigate the problem by adding an authentication mechanism.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (40587), Exploit-DB (3303), Tenable (22466), SecurityFocus (BID 20418†) and OSVDB (32721†). The entries VDB-2578, VDB-32532, VDB-32512 and VDB-37865 are related to this item.
