Linux Kernel 2.6.x __block_prepare_write memory corruption

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

A vulnerability was found in Linux Kernel 2.6.x (Operating System). It has been declared as problematic. This vulnerability affects the function __block_prepare_write. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality. CVE summarizes:

The __block_prepare_write function in fs/buffer.c for Linux kernel 2.6.x before 2.6.13 does not properly clear buffers during certain error conditions, which allows local users to read portions of files that have been unlinked.

The bug was discovered 09/21/2006. The weakness was disclosed 10/12/2006 (Website). The advisory is available at lists.suse.com. This vulnerability was named CVE-2006-4813 since 09/15/2006. The exploitation appears to be easy. Local access is required to approach this attack. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit.

The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 21 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $25k-$100k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 24628 (Mandrake Linux Security Advisory : kernel (MDKSA-2007:012)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Mandriva Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 115509 (Red Hat Kernel Security Update (RHSA-2007:0014)).

Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published 4 months after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (33656) and Tenable (24628). The entries 2551, 2589, 2590 and 2647 are pretty similar.
