Oracle Database Server 8.1.7.4 sql injection

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

A vulnerability was found in Oracle Database Server 8.1.7.4 (Database Software). It has been declared as critical. This vulnerability affects some unknown processing. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a sql injection vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-89. The product constructs all or part of an SQL command using externally-influenced input from an upstream component, but it does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes special elements that could modify the intended SQL command when it is sent to a downstream component. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:

Multiple unspecified vulnerabilities in Oracle Spatial component in Oracle Database 8.1.7.4, 9.0.1.5, 9.2.0.7, 10.1.0.5, and 10.2.0.2 have unknown impact and remote authenticated attack vectors related to (1) mdsys.sdo_lrs, aka Vuln# DB13, and (2) Vuln# DB17. NOTE: as of 20061023, Oracle has not disputed reports from reliable third parties that DB13 is related to bypassing input validation for SQL injection related to convert_to_lrs_layer and dbms_assert, and DB17 is related to SQL injection in the trigger in the SDO_DROP_USER package.

The weakness was shared 10/17/2006 by Esteban Martinez Fayo (Alex) with Application Security, Inc. (Website). The advisory is available at us-cert.gov. This vulnerability was named CVE-2006-5340. The exploitation appears to be difficult. The attack can be initiated remotely. Required for exploitation is a single authentication. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available. This vulnerability is assigned to T1505 by the MITRE ATT&CK project.

It is declared as proof-of-concept. As 0-day the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 56054 (Oracle Database Multiple Vulnerabilities (October 2006 CPU)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Databases. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 19211 (Oracle October 2006 Security Update Multiple Vulnerabilities).

There is no information about possible countermeasures known. It may be suggested to replace the affected object with an alternative product. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 9066.

The vulnerability is also documented in the vulnerability database at Tenable (56054). The entries 2614, 33021, 32832 and 32831 are related to this item.
