with an unknown input leads to a sql injection vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-89. The product constructs all or part of an SQL command using externally-influenced input from an upstream component, but it does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes special elements that could modify the intended SQL command when it is sent to a downstream component. Incomplete blacklist vulnerability in mainfile.php in PHP-Nuke 7.9 and earlier allows remote attackers to conduct SQL injection attacks via (1) "/**/UNION " or (2) " UNION/**/" sequences, which are not rejected by the protection mechanism, as demonstrated by a SQL injection via the eid parameter in a search action in the Encyclopedia module in modules.php.
The weakness was presented 10/26/2006 by Security Team (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at milw0rm.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2006-5525 since 10/26/2006. The exploitation is known to be difficult. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details as well as a public exploit are known. The attack technique deployed by this issue is T1505 according to MITRE ATT&CK.
A public exploit has been developed by Paisterist in Perl and been published before and not just after the advisory. The exploit is available at securityfocus.com. It is declared as functional. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 4 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. By approaching the search of inurl:mainfile.php it is possible to find vulnerable targets with Google Hacking.
There is no information about possible countermeasures known. It may be suggested to replace the affected object with an alternative product.
