Sophos Anti-Virus up to 7.0 Archive input validation

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

A vulnerability, which was classified as problematic, was found in Sophos Anti-Virus (Anti-Malware Software). This affects an unknown function of the component Archive Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a input validation vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-20. The product receives input or data, but it does not validate or incorrectly validates that the input has the properties that are required to process the data safely and correctly. This is going to have an impact on integrity. The summary by CVE is:

The virus detection engine in Sophos Anti-Virus before 2.49.0 does not properly process malformed (1) CAB, (2) LZH, and (3) RAR files with modified headers, which might allow remote attackers to bypass malware detection.

The weakness was disclosed 09/07/2007 by Thierry Zoller with n.runs AG (Website). The advisory is shared at sophos.com. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2007-4787 since 09/10/2007. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. Neither technical details nor an exploit are publicly available.

It is declared as proof-of-concept. We expect the 0-day to have been worth approximately $25k-$100k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 26002 (Sophos Anti-Virus CAB, RAR and LZH Scanning Evasion), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows.

Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at sophos.com. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (36502) and Tenable (26002). The entry 3296 is pretty similar.
