EFS Web Server 4.0 File Sharing cross site scripting

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

A vulnerability was found in EFS Web Server 4.0 (Web Server). It has been classified as problematic. Affected is an unknown code block of the component File Sharing. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a cross site scripting vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-80. The product receives input from an upstream component, but it does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes special characters such as "<", ">", and "&" that could be interpreted as web-scripting elements when they are sent to a downstream component that processes web pages. This is going to have an impact on integrity. CVE summarizes:

Cross-site scripting (XSS) vulnerability in Easy File Sharing (EFS) Web Server 4.0 allows remote attackers to inject arbitrary web script or HTML via the (1) author, (2) content, or (3) title parameters when posting a forum thread. NOTE: the provenance of this information is unknown; the details are obtained solely from third party information.

The bug was discovered 10/31/2006. The weakness was presented 11/03/2006 by Greg Linares (Website). The advisory is shared for download at securityfocus.com. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2006-5713 since 11/03/2006. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. Successful exploitation requires user interaction by the victim. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available. The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1059.007.

A public exploit has been developed in ANSI C. The exploit is shared for download at securityfocus.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 3 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 23636 (Easy File Sharing Web Server Crafted Request ADS Arbitrary File Access), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Web Servers and running in the context r.

There is no information about possible countermeasures known. It may be suggested to replace the affected object with an alternative product.
