Linux Kernel up to 2.6.x minix_bmap numeric error

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

A vulnerability was found in Linux Kernel up to 2.6.x (Operating System). It has been declared as problematic. Affected by this vulnerability is the function minix_bmap. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a numeric error vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-189. As an impact it is known to affect availability. The summary by CVE is:

The minix filesystem code in Linux kernel 2.6.x before 2.6.24, including 2.6.18, allows local users to cause a denial of service (hang) via a malformed minix file stream that triggers an infinite loop in the minix_bmap function. NOTE: this issue might be due to an integer overflow or signedness error.

The weakness was disclosed 11/21/2006 by Chris Evans (Website). The advisory is shared at issues.rpath.com. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2006-6058 since 11/21/2006. The exploitation appears to be difficult. An attack has to be approached locally. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available.

It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 28172 (openSUSE 10 Security Update : kernel (kernel-4641)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family SuSE Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 117491 (CentOS Security Update for kernel (CESA-2007:0672)).

Upgrading to version 2.6.x eliminates this vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (30421) and Tenable (28172). The entry 3449 is pretty similar.
