A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, has been found in Microsoft Windows up to Vista (Operating System). Affected by this issue is an unknown functionality of the component NNTP Response Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. Heap-based buffer overflow in Microsoft Outlook Express 6 and earlier, and Windows Mail for Vista, allows remote Network News Transfer Protocol (NNTP) servers to execute arbitrary code via long NNTP responses that trigger memory corruption.
The bug was discovered 10/09/2007. The weakness was presented 10/09/2007 by Greg Macmanus with iDefense (Website). The advisory is shared for download at labs.idefense.com. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2007-3897 since 07/19/2007. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
