Adobe ColdFusion 7.0/7.0.1 cross site scripting

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

A vulnerability was found in Adobe ColdFusion 7.0/7.0.1 (Programming Language Software). It has been classified as problematic. Affected is an unknown part. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a cross site scripting vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-80. The product receives input from an upstream component, but it does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes special characters such as "<", ">", and "&" that could be interpreted as web-scripting elements when they are sent to a downstream component that processes web pages. This is going to have an impact on integrity. CVE summarizes:

Adobe ColdFusion MX 7.x before 7.0.2 does not properly filter HTML tags when protecting against cross-site scripting (XSS) attacks, which allows remote attackers to inject arbitrary web script or HTML via a NULL byte (%00) in certain HTML tags, as demonstrated using "%00script" in a tag.

The bug was discovered 12/10/2006. The weakness was disclosed 12/12/2006 by Brett Moore with security-assessment.com (Website). The advisory is shared for download at xforce.iss.net. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2006-6483 since 12/12/2006. The exploitability is told to be difficult. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. Successful exploitation requires user interaction by the victim. There are neither technical details nor an exploit publicly available. The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1059.007.

It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 2 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 24279 (ColdFusion MX Null Byte Tag XSS Protection Bypass), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family CGI abuses : XSS and running in the context r.

Upgrading to version 7.x eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published 4 months after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (30841) and Tenable (24279). The entry 2732 is pretty similar.
