A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, has been found in Microsoft Word 2000/2002/2003 (Word Processing Software). This issue affects some unknown processing of the file 12122006-djtest.doc. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. Unspecified vulnerability in Microsoft Word 2000, 2002, and Word Viewer 2003 allows user-assisted remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via a crafted DOC file that triggers memory corruption, as demonstrated via the 12122006-djtest.doc file, a different issue than CVE-2006-5994 and CVE-2006-6456.

The bug was discovered 12/12/2006. The weakness was released 12/14/2006 as confirmed advisory (CERT.org). It is possible to read the advisory at kb.cert.org. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2006-6561 since 12/14/2006. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details as well as a public exploit are known.

The exploit is available at securityfocus.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 2 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $25k-$100k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 24328 (MS07-014 / MS07-015: Vulnerabilities in Microsoft Word and Office Could Allow Remote Code Execution (929434 / 932554) (Mac OS X)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family MacOS X Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 110052 (Microsoft Word Remote Code Execution Vulnerability (MS07-014)).

Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. A possible mitigation has been published 3 months after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 4943.
