The bug was discovered 12/19/2006. The weakness was disclosed 12/19/2006 by Vladimir Vukicevic (moz_bug_r_a4) (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at us-cert.gov. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2006-6502 since 12/13/2006. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not publicly available.

It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 23942 (CentOS 4 : Firefox (CESA-2006:0758)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family CentOS Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 156235 (Oracle Enterprise Linux Update for Firefox (ELSA-2006:0758)).

Upgrading to version 2.x eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published 4 days after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 9089.
