Mozilla Firefox/Thunderbird up to 1.5.0.8 heap-based overflow

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

A vulnerability was found in Mozilla Firefox and Thunderbird up to 1.5.0.8 (Web Browser). It has been declared as critical. This vulnerability affects some unknown processing. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a heap-based overflow vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-122. A heap overflow condition is a buffer overflow, where the buffer that can be overwritten is allocated in the heap portion of memory, generally meaning that the buffer was allocated using a routine such as malloc(). As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:

Multiple heap-based buffer overflows in Mozilla Thunderbird before 1.5.0.9 and SeaMonkey before 1.0.7 allow remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via (1) external message modies with long Content-Type headers or (2) long RFC2047-encoded (MIME non-ASCII) headers.

The weakness was presented 12/19/2006 by Vladimir Vukicevic (moz_bug_r_a4) (Website). The advisory is shared for download at us-cert.gov. This vulnerability was named CVE-2006-6505 since 12/13/2006. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. There are neither technical details nor an exploit publicly available.

It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 23943 (CentOS 3 / 4 : seamonkey (CESA-2006:0759)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family CentOS Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 156236 (Oracle Enterprise Linux Update for SeaMonkey (ELSA-2006:0759)).

Upgrading to version 1.5.0.9 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published 1 days after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 9089.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (30971), Tenable (23943), SecurityFocus (BID 21668†), OSVDB (31350†) and Secunia (SA23420†). See VDB-2774, VDB-2770, VDB-2771 and VDB-2777 for similar entries. Once again VulDB remains the best source for vulnerability data.
