IBM AIX 5.2/5.3 lquerypv -V memory corruption

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

A vulnerability, which was classified as problematic, was found in IBM AIX 5.2/5.3 (Operating System). This affects an unknown function of the component lquerypv. The manipulation of the argument -V with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:

Stack-based buffer overflow in the domacro function in ftp in IBM AIX 5.2 and 5.3 allows local users to gain privileges via a long parameter to a macro, as demonstrated by executing a macro via the $ command.

The issue has been introduced in 10/01/2002. The weakness was presented 10/31/2007 by Sean Larsson with iDefense (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at www14.software.ibm.com. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2007-4217 since 08/08/2007. The attack needs to approached within the local network. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit.

It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 1856 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $25k-$100k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 28980 (AIX 5.2 TL 10 : bos.net.tcp.client (U812065)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family AIX Local Security Checks and running in the context l.

Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at ibm.com. A possible mitigation has been published even before and not after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (38162) and Tenable (28980). See 3421, 3428, 3427 and 3424 for similar entries.
