A vulnerability was found in Foo Labs Xpdf 3.02p11 (Document Reader Software). It has been rated as critical. Affected by this issue is the function CCITTFaxStream::lookChar of the file Stream.cc. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:

Heap-based buffer overflow in the CCITTFaxStream::lookChar method in xpdf/Stream.cc in Xpdf 3.02p11 allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via a PDF file that contains a crafted CCITTFaxDecode filter.

The weakness was released 11/07/2007 by Alin Rad Pop with Secunia Research (Website). The advisory is available at secunia.com. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2007-5393 since 10/12/2007. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. Successful exploitation requires user interaction by the victim. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit.

It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 67605 (Oracle Linux 3 : tetex (ELSA-2007-1028)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Oracle Linux Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 155992 (Oracle Enterprise Linux Update for CUPS (ELSA-2007-1022)).

Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at foolabs.com. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version. A possible mitigation has been published 2 weeks after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 5804.
