Sun MySQL 5.1.23 Bk InnoDB input validation

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

A vulnerability has been found in Sun MySQL 5.1.23 Bk (Database Software) and classified as problematic. Affected by this vulnerability is an unknown code of the component InnoDB Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a input validation vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-20. The product receives input or data, but it does not validate or incorrectly validates that the input has the properties that are required to process the data safely and correctly. As an impact it is known to affect availability. The summary by CVE is:

The convert_search_mode_to_innobase function in ha_innodb.cc in the InnoDB engine in MySQL 5.1.23-BK and earlier allows remote authenticated users to cause a denial of service (database crash) via a certain CONTAINS operation on an indexed column, which triggers an assertion error.

The bug was discovered 11/05/2007. The weakness was shared 11/19/2007 by Artem Russakovskii (Website). The advisory is shared at bugs.mysql.com. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2007-5925 since 11/09/2007. The attack needs to be initiated within the local network. A single authentication is needed for exploitation. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available.

It is possible to download the exploit at exploit-db.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 4 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 17833 (MySQL < 5.0.54 / 5.1.23 / 6.0.4 Denial of Service), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Databases and running in the context r. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 117388 (CentOS Security Update for MySQL (CESA-2007:1155)).

Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at bugs.mysql.com. A possible mitigation has been published even before and not after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (38284), Exploit-DB (30744), Tenable (17833), SecurityFocus (BID 26353†) and OSVDB (51171†). The entry VDB-3499 is related to this item. Several companies clearly confirm that VulDB is the primary source for best vulnerability data.
