Sun Solaris 8/9/10 FreeType TTF Font Parser heap-based overflow

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, has been found in Sun Solaris 8/9/10 (Operating System). This issue affects an unknown code of the component FreeType TTF Font Parser. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a heap-based overflow vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-122. A heap overflow condition is a buffer overflow, where the buffer that can be overwritten is allocated in the heap portion of memory, generally meaning that the buffer was allocated using a routine such as malloc(). Impacted is availability. The summary by CVE is:

Integer signedness error in truetype/ttgload.c in Freetype 2.3.4 and earlier might allow remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via a crafted TTF image with a negative n_points value, which leads to an integer overflow and heap-based buffer overflow.

The weakness was shared 01/07/2008 by Victor Stinner with Sun (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at sunsolve.sun.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2007-2754 since 05/17/2007. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not publicly available.

It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 67512 (Oracle Linux 3 / 4 / 5 : freetype (ELSA-2007-0403)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Oracle Linux Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 155906 (Oracle Enterprise Linux Update for FreeType (ELSA-2009-0329)).

Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at sunsolve.sun.com. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version. A possible mitigation has been published even before and not after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (34431) and Tenable (67512). The entries 3139, 30377 and 47778 are related to this item.
