PHP 5.2.0/5.2.1 Wrapper stack-based overflow

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, has been found in PHP 5.2.0/5.2.1 (Programming Language Software). Affected by this issue is some unknown processing of the component Wrapper. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a stack-based overflow vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-121. A stack-based buffer overflow condition is a condition where the buffer being overwritten is allocated on the stack (i.e., is a local variable or, rarely, a parameter to a function). Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:

Stack-based buffer overflow in the zip:// URL wrapper in PECL ZIP 1.8.3 and earlier, as bundled with PHP 5.2.0 and 5.2.1, allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via a long zip:// URL, as demonstrated by actively triggering URL access from a remote PHP interpreter via avatar upload or blog pingback.

The bug was discovered 03/09/2007. The weakness was disclosed 03/09/2007 by Stefan Esser (Website). The advisory is shared for download at vupen.com. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2007-1399 since 03/10/2007. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available.

After immediately, there has been an exploit disclosed. The exploit is available at php-security.org. It is declared as proof-of-concept. As 0-day the estimated underground price was around $25k-$100k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 25677 (Debian DSA-1330-1 : php5 - several vulnerabilities), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Debian Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 165086 (SUSE Security Update for PHP4, PHP5 (SUSE-SA:2007:020)).

Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published 5 months after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (32889), Tenable (25677) and Exploit-DB (3440). The entries 33752 and 35009 are pretty similar.
