MySQL up to 5.0.35 filesort denial of service

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

MySQL 5.x before 5.0.36 allows local users to cause a denial of service (database crash) by performing information_schema table subselects and using ORDER BY to sort a single-row result, which prevents certain structure elements from being initialized and triggers a NULL dereference in the filesort function.

The bug was discovered 03/09/2007. The weakness was shared 03/12/2007 with SEC-CONSULT (Website). The advisory is available at securityfocus.com. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2007-1420 since 03/12/2007. The exploitability is told to be easy. Local access is required to approach this attack. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. Technical details and a public exploit are known.

The exploit is shared for download at exploit-db.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 3 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 17803 (MySQL < 5.0.36 Denial of Service), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Databases and running in the context r. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 19265 (MySQL Single-Row Subselect and INFORMATION_SCHEMA Denial of Service Vulnerability).

Upgrading to version 5.x eliminates this vulnerability.
