A vulnerability has been found in PHP 5.2.0 (Programming Language Software) and classified as problematic. Affected by this vulnerability is an unknown functionality. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a cross site scripting vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-80. The product receives input from an upstream component, but it does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes special characters such as "<", ">", and "&" that could be interpreted as web-scripting elements when they are sent to a downstream component that processes web pages. As an impact it is known to affect integrity. The summary by CVE is:
ext/filter in PHP 5.2.0, when FILTER_SANITIZE_STRING is used with the FILTER_FLAG_STRIP_LOW flag, does not properly strip HTML tags, which allows remote attackers to conduct cross-site scripting (XSS) attacks via HTML with a < character followed by certain whitespace characters, which passes one filter but is collapsed into a valid tag, as demonstrated using %0b.
The bug was discovered 03/11/2007. The weakness was disclosed 03/14/2007 by Stefan Esser (Website). The advisory is shared at php-security.org. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2007-1454 since 03/14/2007. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. It demands that the victim is doing some kind of user interaction. Neither technical details nor an exploit are publicly available. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1059.007 for this issue.
The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 3 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 25100 (Debian DSA-1283-1 : php5 - several vulnerabilities), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Debian Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 12259 (PHP Prior to 5.2.1/4.4.5 Multiple Vulnerabilities).
Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published 2 months after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (33229) and Tenable (25100). The entries 2920, 2911, 2914 and 2917 are pretty similar.
