A vulnerability was found in libwpd up to 0.8.8 and classified as critical. This issue affects the function wp3tablesgroup::_readcontents
. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
Multiple heap-based buffer overflows in WordPerfect Document importer/exporter (libwpd) before 0.8.9 allow user-assisted remote attackers to cause a denial of service (application crash) and possibly execute arbitrary code via a crafted WordPerfect file in which values to loop counters are not properly handled in the (1) WP3TablesGroup::_readContents and (2) WP5DefinitionGroup_DefineTablesSubGroup::WP5DefinitionGroup_DefineTablesSubGroup functions. NOTE: the integer overflow has been split into CVE-2007-1466.
The weakness was disclosed 03/16/2007 by Sean Larsson (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at vupen.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2007-0002 since 12/19/2006. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit.
It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 24835 (Debian DSA-1268-1 : libwpd - integer overflow), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Debian Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 165083 (SUSE Security Update for OpenOffice_org,libwpd (SUSE-SA:2007:023)).
Upgrading to version 0.8.9 eliminates this vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 8967.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (33109) and Tenable (24835). The entry 35628 is pretty similar.
