X MultiMedia System 1.2.10 timed stack-based overflow

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

A vulnerability was found in X MultiMedia System 1.2.10. It has been rated as critical. Affected by this issue is an unknown function of the component timed. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a stack-based overflow vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-121. A stack-based buffer overflow condition is a condition where the buffer being overwritten is allocated on the stack (i.e., is a local variable or, rarely, a parameter to a function). Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:

Integer underflow in X MultiMedia System (xmms) 1.2.10 allows user-assisted remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via crafted header information in a skin bitmap image, which results in a stack-based buffer overflow.

The bug was discovered 03/21/2007. The weakness was released 03/21/2007 by Sven Krewitt with Secunia Research (Website). The advisory is shared for download at vupen.com. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2007-0654 since 02/01/2007. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. There are neither technical details nor an exploit publicly available.

It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 25011 (Debian DSA-1277-1 : XMMS - several vulnerabilities), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Debian Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 115530 (XMMS Integer Overflow and Underflow Vulnerabilities).

Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published 2 weeks after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (33203) and Tenable (25011). Entry connected to this vulnerability is available at 35755.
